Our Story
The brand we use to brand our cattle here at the Freeman Ranch was registered with the state of Colorado by my great grandmother Carolyn Freeman on Sept 30, 1899. Our family has been in the commercial cattle business since then. We are now located 60 miles south east of Colorado Springs and 18 miles south of Rush, Colorado.
2002 was the driest year on history for this part of the world, drier than the dustbowls of the 30's and 40's. We had less than 2.25 inches of measurable moisture that year. this high desert front range country usually gets between 5 and 6 in a good year. The 2002 draught had a detrimental affect on the cattle business in eastern Colorado. It was estimated that 60% of the cattle in these parts left for greener pastures.
We sold all of our commercial cows and kept praying for rain. I had been thinking of getting more involved in the cattle business and was looking for a way to make an impact on the industry. I began searching for a breed of cattle that I could build a long term program around. Cattle that could stand up to the harsh winters, draught, altitude, and large open country that we have here. The more I looked the more interesting the Braunvieh breed became. Coming from the Swiss Alps they can handle the altitude and the cold. There was a test in South Africa that showed that this breed can handle the heat.
The Meat Animal Research Center in Nebraska shows they efficiently bring pounds of beef home a weining. and the Great Western Beef Expo in Sterling, Colorado has shown they consistently marble well and create quality carcasses. We feel the Braunvieh breed brings more good traits to the table than any other single breed. In fall of 2003 we bought our first Braunvieh cows and since then have put together a herd of what we feel to be quality cattle that can make a difference.
